long time no post!!! haha... so here i'm to post abt some stuff that happened today in sch..
i'm staying up so late because (besides training) of a talent show.. it's something like american idol.. you roughly get the idea.. anyway, today's the finals.. the finalists are not very good, most probably because they're nervous and lack experience but it's all right.. since it's more of supporting your friends than really checking out good performance.. though there were a few that was not bad.. after the competition, there was a performance by 2 people from campus superstars!! they were actually pretty good.. haha.. might improve the chances of me watching singapore talent shows somehow.. though i think the odds are pretty low still..
ok, that was a brief overview of what happened.. but the more impt thing is that there was this group singing some duet (a guy and a girl; the rest were playing the instruments)... after the song ended, the guys kissed the girl!! haha.. though i didn't catch that scene but it created quite some buzz.. which was pretty good for warming up the atmosphere..
it was only later that i heard from my friend that they were actually scolded by the council teacher-in-charge (dunno who is it but who cares).. and they were crying.. think it was pretty harsh.. but whatever it is it made me wonder about whether the teacher did the right thing.. maybe i'm biased but i dun see any pt in that teacher making a big deal abt it.. public display of affection.. so what? it's in sch.. so what? it's in front of teachers and students.. so what?
is pda wrong? why is it wrong? if the teachers think it is morally wrong, who are they to determine what is morally correct or wrong? if they are merely following protocols, are the protocols correct? assuming that teachers are supposed to teach us how to think critically, differentiating what's right or wrong, why are they not thinking about the appropriateness of these protocols??
which brings about another question.. what is the role of school education??? from my own point of view, in terms of academic, schools are supposed to teach us how to learn, how to think.. especially with the advancement of teachnology e.g. internet, there is vast information out there that is easily accessible... anyone out there with internet can get a hold of these information.. therefore, skills in selecting appropriate information, determining the accuracy and whether the information is correct, and finally applying the gained information.. (sadly, schools nowadays mostly assume the role of feeding us information, and focusing on generating as-many-as-possible no. of A students...)
in terms of character building wise, they include cv, resilence ws, etc. while leadership programs may indeed be helpful but things like resilence workshop/cv??? i think many students think they are just a pure waste of time.. at least none of the students i've met think that such lessons have made any difference in their lives.. me included.. do they really think that a few videos, lectures and workshops are really going to shape our moral values???? maybe in primary school it might achieve some results.. jc? i doubt so... if moral values can be shaped this easily in youths, perhaps there might not be some many problematic teenagers around..
then they want us to pay for them when we dun want to go for these courses -_-" where's democracy? where's the freedom of choice? does going to school means that students must bow to the whatever the school arrange or want us to do??
an example would be the "donation" for school development fund.. which i think is purely a scam to get our money.. when we refuse to donate, the teacher would lecture us on how selfish we are, how we should be "contributing" back to school, to society, etc. wth.. (maybe the teacher is accountable to the school or she really feels that way, in the later case i would simply think that she can become a better teacher by finding out why we simply do not want to donate) .. can't we simply dun want to donate because we dun see any point in donating??? we dun see any improvement in infrastructure, instead it's breaking down everywhere.. from classrooms to canteen to LT.. while they might argue that this is precisely where the donations come in, but what about the money they spend on plasma tvs? Shouldn’t the money for sch development be used on better areas such as the air-cons (for there are no fans)? furthermore, the principal said that she would rather spend the money on education than infrastructure.. if that's the case, why should we be bothered??? not to mention that with the endowments from MOE, we seriously do not believe that the school do not have sufficient money for development.. if they say they subsidised a lot for programs, i would argue that we do indeed pay a large proportion for them.. many of which most of us probably feel that we won't benefit much from..
having an authoritarian school climate is probably a deciding factor in building school spirit and donations for the school.. when we dun feel for the sch, we dun see any pt in "contributing" back.. sure they asked us for feedbacks, for suggestions.. but in the end, we dun see improvements.. on the contrary, we see excuses, we see denials.. when we proposed suggestions or improvements, the response is simply no and then nothing else is heard abt it.. and den maybe someday when they feel like it (probably to appease grumbles from the student population) they throw in “something nice” and make it out to be such a big.. maybe there are people who will say we dun appreciate the things that the sch has done for us… compared to schools in poorer countries, we might be much better off.. but it’s human nature to compare.. and we, students can hardly be blamed for hoping to see similar standards in facilities among the many institutions.. maybe we shouldn’t expect too much.. afterall, it’s just a short 2 years.. get it over and done with.. den perhaps, the sch shouldn’t expect us to contribute much back too..
whatever it is, I think school stifles the ability of students to make changes, to make improvements.. while I might not be able to say it for other schs, but at least here, it does.. when suggestions or improvements get rejected, when students dun have a say in their immediate environment, many students just see no point in voicing out their opinions at all.. probably explaining why many Singaporeans are passive abt politics too.. perhaps it’s all a result of the education system..
lol.. this feels like a session for me to voice out all my unhappinesss abt the current education system i'm studying under.. haixx.. feel much better.. haha.. maybe someone can post a reply abt this.. maybe we can even have a debate abt this.. lol.. discussion might be a better word.. anyway, it might be rather hard to follow my train of thoughts cuz i think i deviate a little.. haha.. and my brain dun work particularly well when it's past midnight.. lol.. hope to see new posts soon..
and take care of yourselves!! sp, if there's anything, you need to tell us k...
with that, i shall end here.. oyasuminasai!!!
